TBI Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in Grundy County

The weapon the suspect pointed at officers turned out to be a pellet rifle

ALTAMONT, Tenn. (AP) – Authorities in Tennessee say a sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man who pointed what turned out to be a pellet rifle at officers after being told to drop the weapon.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a statement that deputies in Grundy County initially responded Wednesday night to a report of a man pointing a rifle at vehicles.

The statement says deputies gave verbal commands for him to drop the weapon, but he did not and instead pointed it at them.

The bureau says one deputy shot the man and 64-year-old Joe Pickett was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Authorities say the weapon Pickett had was later identified as a pellet rife.
