Alabama Defense Clamps Down on Vols in 56-38 Victory

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Alabama guard Rodney Cooper scored 17 points and Alabama improved its win streak to six games with a 56-38 victory over Tennessee on Saturday.
Alabama (12-3, 2-0 SEC) held the Vols (9-5, 1-1) without a field for more than 14 minutes in the second half to overcome a 6-of-22 performance from the perimeter.
Alabama guard Ricky Tarrant had 14 points and forward Jimmie Taylor added 13.
Josh Richardson had 17 points for Tennessee, which shot 31 percent from the floor.
Tennessee trailed by five points at the half, but Richardson scored eight consecutive points out of the break for a 32-30 lead with 16:50 remaining.
Cooper sank a key 3-pointer midway through the second half to put Alabama ahead 41-36.
The Vols went 14:06 without a made field goal in the second half following Tennessee forward Derek Reese’s jumper at the 14:44 mark. Alabama outscored Tennessee 18-2 during that span.
