Alabama Man Facing Charges After Leading Officers on Wild Interstate 75 Chase

DALTON, Ga. (WDEF) – It’s hard to believe thief who was behind the wheel of this stolen vehicle is alive.

Sergeant Chris Harris, with the Georgia State Patrol, says, “He spoke very little. He was being treated at the hospital here in Dalton and he’s not giving us any information why he was doing what he was doing.”

Georgia State Patrol says Kevin Gibson, 29, from Mobile, Alabama, somehow made his way to Bartow County where he stole a vehicle from a lady delivering newspapers.

Around 2 am, deputies caught up with him on Interstate 75.

Sgt. Harris adds, “We do believe he was under the influence of some type of drug, but basically I believe he was running because he knew he was driving a stolen vehicle and that he’d be caught driving a stolen vehicle.”

Officers say Gibson drove through Bartow, Gordon, and Whitfield Counties, sometimes going more than 100 miles per hour, before troopers were able to stop him.

Sgt. Harris says, “Our trooper was able to perform a pit manuver on the vehicle. The vehicle went across the interstate and stuck the guardrail, rolled over, and it was at that point that the subject was taken into custody.”

Now, it’s hard to tell if this vehicle is an SUV or compact car.

Gibson is recovering at Hamilton Medical Center.

When he gets out he’s facing several felony charges including theft, DUI, and reckless driving.

Those alone carry sentences greater than one year if convicted.
