Athens reports attempted kidnapping of 12 year old girl at soccer complex

ATHENS, Tennessee (WDEF) – The city of Athens is looking for a man suspected of trying to kidnap at 12 year old girl this afternoon.

The report came from the McMinn Soccer Complex on McMinn Avenue.

A Middle School student told police that she believes a man tried to abduct her.

Students and faculty were on the soccer field when the girl went to the bathrooms.

She says the man approached her, tried to grab her, and she ran.

Another student also said he saw the man and gave a similar description.

That description is a white male, approximately 40-50 years of age, wearing a brown raincoat and black shoes. And he may have been wearing gloves.

The male student added that he was wearing a blue cap with a yellow or gold “C” on it.

Police Chief Clifton Couch says “this is an evolving situation, and the Police Department is
actively investigating. We never want anyone to panic, but we believe that it is best to err on the side of caution any time we have knowledge that something potentially dangerous is going on in our community. To that end, we recommend that parents be especially vigilant as we try to ascertain further details.”
