Athletic Director Mark Wharton Digging Latest Report Card For UTC Student Athletes
Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Winning games and titles is what we expect from UTC athletics, but you can’t over look winning in the class room. Mocs athletes certainly made the grade during the spring semester with numbers that any athletic director would be proud of.
This past spring the Mocs had 14 athletic teams post a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the third semester in a row.
Said Mocs athletic director Mark Wharton:”And to do it all in COVID and zoom. Kind of revamp everything we’ve done. The model. To be able to come out the last two semesters having as great of success as we’ve had.”
Another academic number that sticks out.
20-percent of UTC student athletes posted a 4.0 GPA.
Said Wharton:”Two out of three of our athletes were on the AD Honor Roll, which is outstanding and unbelievable. You know 20 years ago or not even that long ago that it was four out of ten student-athletes that walked across the stage. Now we’re talking nine out of ten that are graduating in five years.”
Wharton says UTC puts in measures to make sure athletes are keeping up in the classroom.
Said Wharton:”We have Sunday study halls. Depending on the sport when they come in. It’s really a carrot to them that a certain GPA and above, they don’t have to go to study hall, but if you get below that, it’s mandatory.”
Wharton wants student athletes to be successful in all aspects of their college life.
Said Wharton:”We’re not going to go out and just win first. I think it’s the total athletic experience. Socially, academically, as well as competitively. We do that really well here. We’re as close as you have seen to being pretty special in all three phases.”
