Boyd Buchanan’s Cooper Hodge Balancing Quarterback and Defense For the Bucs
Chattanooga-(WDEF) Top-ranked Boyd Buchanan opened the playoffs last night with an easy 41-0 win over Eagleville. Cooper Hodge has certainly been making it look easy at quarterback for the Bucs this season, blending size, speed, and a strong arm.
Boyd Buchanan coach Grant Reynolds says it was easy to see Cooper Hodge’s athletic ability when Hodge was coming through middle school. And Reynolds added that Hodge also possessed those coveted leadership skills.
Reynolds-"You just see kind of how they have poise in the middle school games. How their peers react to them is a big part of it too."
Reporter-"What did you see from people reacting to Cooper?"
Reynolds-"When he was younger, he had a good work ethic. That was what we liked about him was he worked hard."
Hodge had to wait his turn to play quarterback at Boyd, so he jumped right in on defense.
Reynolds-"He played linebacker for us. We knew he was aggressive. He wasn’t afraid to mix it up with people. Did a good job there starting out as a linebacker for us."
Hodge continues to play defense this season, and he admits, it can be tricky.
Hodge-"It’s definitely different on both sides of the ball. On defense, you have to be kind of crazy. Got to play with your head on fire. Then at quarterback, you have to be calm and collected. I flip the switch on and off usually on both sides of the ball."
Hodge brings great balance to the quarterback position, his rushing and passing yards this season are pretty similar. Throw that in with his senior leadership, and that’s a valuable combination at playoff time.
Reynolds-"It means a lot when kids look up to him. He works hard. He’s a very good student of the game, and he’s a good student in the class room."
Reporter-"How much confidence do you have right now?"
Hodge-"Very confident. We’ve done a lot of things rights. We’ve won a lot of football games. We trust in ourselves, and we trust in our teammates."
