Calhoun Grad Charlie Culberson’s Walk Off Magic For the Braves Not Surprising to His High School Coach
Calhoun, GA-(WDEF-TV) The Braves Charlie Culberson has nine career homeruns, but four have been walk-off winners. In his first season with Atlanta this year, he had two walk-off winners in one week. Culberson of course played high school baseball at Calhoun, and we caught up with his high school coach to see why Culberson has such a flair for the dramatic.
Nobody has revved up the Braves this season like Charlie Culberson with his walk-off homers.
Culberson’s high school coach Chip Henderson saw Culberson rev up the crowd at Cahoun before the game.
Said Henderson:”One of his signature moves before the game would start. He would run out and do a back-flip round-off and land on his feet kind of like Ozzie Smith. That was pretty neat. It got the crowd pumped.”
Culberson helped the Yellow Jackets win the 2005 state title, and his jersey is now retired on the Yellow Jackets left field wall. Culberson even has a special place in Dodgers history. He had a walk-off winning homer to clinch the 2016 division title for Los Angeles. It was also the final call at Dodger stadium for legendary broadcaster Vin Scully.
Said Henderson:”I think it all goes down to mind set. Just not getting caught up in it, and just trying to stay even keel. I think that just speaks volumes for Charlie Culberson and how he goes about his business.”
Now the walk-off wizard is using his magic for his hometown Braves.
Said Henderson:”Here he was. He grew up 60 miles north of Atlanta. Followed the Braves, but back then, they played at Turner Field, and he would go by with dreams and visions of one day putting on that uniform and playing for Atlanta. So the dream came true” Said Henderson after one of Culberson’s walk-off celebrations,”Were they throwing dirt on you? He said well I didn’t realize it until I started showering, and I had dirt everywhere. He says if that’s what they want to do for situations like that, he said I’ll do it every time.”
Henderson admires how Culberson is making the most of his opportunity with Atlanta.
Said Henderson:”He fills that utility role to a ‘T’. And I think just keeping that proper mind set, you know putting team before self. Just a true professional.”
