Catoosa volunteers begin putting out Memorial Day flags

RINGGOLD, Georgia (WDEF) – Catoosa County is continuing the Memorial Day tradition, by honoring local veterans.

If you’re down in Ringgold you’ll see streets covered with flags and crosses to remember those vets who have passed away.

It started in the 70’s.

The local VFW post started the flag posting tradition until volunteers took it over in 2002.

There are more than 1800 flags this year.

“We have a huge backing and appreciation of the people who have served. Most of the the crosses represent ancestors and relative of the people who do this work.”

This year will be the first time a cross will be posted for Corporal Henry Helms.

His remains were recently returned to the U-S.

There will be a memorial service next Monday night at 7 at Ringgold city hall.
