Chattanooga Celebrates MLK Jr. Day

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — Chattanooga honors the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. on a day dedicated to the Civil Rights activist. The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga and the Unity Group of Chattanooga are hosting events in commemoration of MLK Jr. on this Day of Service.

The Unity Group of Chattanooga is hosting its 53rd annual MLK Parade and March.

The parade lineup begins on Georgia Avenue near Miller Park at 12:30 p.m., with the parade beginning at 1 p.m. The parade will then proceed down MLK Blvd. toward Peeples St.

Their main program will begin at 3 p.m. at Olivet Baptist Church, located at 740 E. Martin Luther King Blvd. in Chattanooga.

The group says their featured speaker will be Pastor Dr. Jamal Harrison Bryant of Lithonia, Georgia.

The Unity Group of Chattanooga has had a week-long celebration, which started on Sunday, January 8. Today will end their week of MLK Jr. celebratory events.

The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga (ULGC) also hosted its third annual MLK Day Youth Leadership Symposium Monday morning.

The theme was “exploring historical and current social justice matters.” The group said the event included games, debates and fun.

The ULGC event took place at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center. It lasted from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., and it was recommended for youths aged 12 and up.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated annually on the third Monday of January. This day is in remembrance of his birthday, which was January 15, 1929.
