Chattanooga firefighters to install smoke detectors for free

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – With Daylight Saving Time starting this weekend, fire officials say this is a good time to check your smoke detectors. Chattanooga firefighters say you should make sure it is functioning and change the battery, if needed.

They say it is also important to be aware that smoke detectors have an expiration date, which is usually ten years.

According to officials, In many cases, fires could have been prevented if the homeowners had a working smoke detector.

Assistant Fire Marshall, Chuck Hartung, said “Several cases across the city and across the nation where people do not have working smoke detectors in their house or they have a smoke detector that just doesn’t have a battery in it. Or it is not even installed, where people had fire and do not even know until too late in the game.”

This weekend, March 11th, firefighters are installing smoke detectors for free in the South Brainerd area.

Staging will start at 9:00 a.m. They will begin their door-to-door visits around 9:30 a.m.

The South Brainerd area is between McBrien and S. Moore Road. Staging will be at the Anglican Church of the Redeemer, 104 McBrien Rd
