Chattanooga to host largest event in IRONMAN 70.3 history

Chattanooga, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Scenic City will be at the center of the world stage during the largest IRONMAN 70.3 event in history – the 2017 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.

This year’s championship, the first year it will be a two-day race, will bring a record of more than 4,500 athletes from around the world. They range in age from 18 to 86 and represent 91 countries, regions, and territories.

In 2016, the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship was held in Mooloolaba, Queensland, Australia; 2015 in Zell am See-Kaprun, Austria; and in 2014, Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, Canada.

Chattanooga is: 1 of 5 cities in North America to host a full-distance IRONMAN and an IRONMAN 70.3; 1 of 10 cities in the world to host a full-distance IRONMAN and an IRONMAN 70.3; and the ONLY city on the planet to host a full-distance IRONMAN, an IRONMAN 70.3, and the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.

The four-day event week kicks off with a FREE Made in Tennessee Celebration on Wednesday, Sept. 6, from 6-10 p.m.

The concert headliner is iHeartRadio’s “On The Verge” country music artist Carly Pearce who will get the crowd going with her earthy, textured voice that is taking country music by storm.

Broad Street restaurants and shops will showcase southern inspired food, wine, and spirits.

All events are free and open to the public. They will take place between 3rd Street and the downtown riverfront along the Tennessee River and adjacent to the Tennessee Aquarium.

The community is invited to attend the Made In Tennessee Celebration, the Parade of Nations, and to cheer on the athletes as they take on the challenging course. These events  The “Late For The Train” 5K Fun Run and IRONKIDS events are also open for the community to register and participate in.
