Chattanooga Mocs Debut New Beach Volleyball Team

Chattanooga-(WDEF-TV) Fans had to wait a few extra months for the Chattanooga Mocs’ newest addition — beach volleyball. But this week, history began in the sand. News 12’s Angela Moryan has the story.

Said head coach Darin Van Horn: “I guess we couldn’t have drawn it up any better.”

After the inaugural fall season was cancelled, Chattanooga Beach Volleyball christened the brand new home facility with the program’s first win Wednesday.

Said player Baylee Young: “Our first home match of the entire program of the inaugural season, being our first sweep, it’s exhilarating.”

Said player Hanley Lomax: “I actually got chills earlier thinking about it, just watching and cheering everybody on.”

Said Van Horn: “It was definitely a hard battle. As you could see, a lot of the matches went three sets. We even had to fight back quite a bit, but I just think that shows the resilience of this group and how much they’re willing to put in this program and start it the right way and do it the right way.”

The ‘right way’ can be whatever this legacy team decides.

Said Lomax: “We don’t have a lot of things set in stone, so we kind of have to create from the ground up, and it’s actually been quite a fun journey … We’re able to create the culture that we want and start off on a great note.”

Said Young: “The culture we’ve created is really uplifting. We really try to stay like a family. It’s just a great environment, and I’m so happy to be a part of it and set the path for the rest of the program.”

You better believe that path will include some ‘Dixieland Delight’.

Said Van Horn: “I had one of the indoor girls say, ‘This doesn’t even feel like a competition. There’s music playing. I never thought it would be so laid back.’ You know, that’s just what beach volleyball is. It’s a very laid back community. They love to compete. It’s a very unique community that I don’t think is available to most sports out there, so I think that’s why it’s such a special sport, and we’re excited to be a part of it.”

Said Young: “We didn’t have much to prove when we came in, but I think we definitely have shown everybody that we’re here for business. Like, we don’t mess around. We came to play. It’s something to look forward to.
We should be on everybody’s radar, that’s for sure.”
