Chattanooga Vehicle Involved in I 24 Standoff

Manchester, TN (WDEF) – A hostage drama ended with a suicide this morning on the side of I 24 in Coffee County.

And it all began in Chattanooga.

Police tell WTVF that the pickup was headed to Nashville from Chattanooga with six people.

Witnesses say 24 year old Jose Luis Garcia forced the driver of the truck to pull over around Manchester during the night.

He held them against their will for six hours on the side of the freeway.

Around 5:30 this morning, one of the hostages managed to call 911 and dispatchers listened in to the drama.

They were able to trace the call to I 24.

When an officer approached Garcia, he pulled a gun and shot himself.

But the bullet also hit two women in the vehicle.

Garcia was killed and the other two people treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Officials are not saying how the people in the truck were connected.

Garcia had apparently just violated his parole for aggravated robbery.
