Cherokee Co. makes sex offender registry arrest

Murphy, NC (WDEF) — A foot chase over suspected drug activity turns into a sex offender registry case in the North Carolina mountains.

Cherokee County officers were investigating suspicious behavior Friday on Highway 64.

When 38 year old Robert Burl Fletcher III ran, they gave chase.

After catching him, they found a small amount of suspected meth on him.

But they also discovered active warrants on him from Clay and Gaston Counties.

The warrants say he failed to register as a convicted sex offender.

Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer stated “We can not over stress the importance of the Sex Offender Registry laws and their importance in keeping registered offenders in compliance.”

Sheriff Palmer asks if you should have any information concerning this case or any other case to report suspicious activity and suspected violations of the law to please call 828-837-3144 or submit a tip at crime.tips@cherokeecounty-nc.gov.
