Cherokee County deputies arrest sexual battery suspect

MURPHY, N.C. (WDEF) – Cherokee County Sheriff Derrick Palmer announced the arrest of 53-year-old Kenneth James Laney for trespassing and for the sexual battery of an adult female.

He gave authorities a Marble, North Carolina address.

It all began when the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported disturbance at residence in the Marble Community of Cherokee County Monday.

Upon further investigation, officials determined Laney was suspect of trespassing upon property owned by the victim.

They also learned Laney was also suspect in the sexual battery of an adult female who resided at the residence where Laney was trespassing.

He was arrested and is being held on a $2,000 bond.

Laney is awaiting a August 2nd District Court hearing.

Officials tell WDEF News12 Now that because of the sensitive nature of the crime reported no further press releases will be made concerning this case.
