Child Passenger Safety Week 2015 kicks off today

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – Listen up parents and caregivers! It’s National Child Passenger Safety Week, and Safe Kids Georgia is urging everyone to make sure their car seats and booster seats are as safe as possible for the little ones.

"I’ve seen some of them that are not installed correctly at all, and they would almost perform in a way that would hurt the child more than help them," said Tim Allen, owner of Children’s Fair off of Lee Hwy.

Allen is a certified car seat technician for installation and safety checks, and said properly installing a child’s car or booster seat is extremely important because it can reduce the risk of accident-related deaths by as much as 71 percent.

Last year alone more than six million car seats were recalled for safety defects, one of the largest car seat recalls in U.S. history. Yet, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, less than half of those seats were never repaired.

Allen said that could have been avoided if more parents filled out the registration card that comes with every new car seat, "A lot of parents don’t. You know sometimes the recall is not a major thing… it may just be double-checking something that they’ve seen come up on a couple of seats."

Other child safety tips include double-checking the expiration date on the child’s seat, because having an expired seat is just as dangerous as not having one at all. Also, always know where the seat came from, and that it hasn’t been used in an accident before.
