City Council approves vendor for CPD body cameras

Chattanooga, Tenn. (WDEF) — It’s an important day for the Chattanooga Police Department in their quest for body cameras.

It,s an initiative that’s lasted for more than two years now, after community members expressed serious interest in seeing them on every officer in the department.

Chief Fred Fletcher says they’ve been testing out the cameras for quite some time and that after plenty of research & studying, a vendor for the cameras was finally selected.

Council members approved that vendor today, as well as a detailed policy that will be put in place to make sure the cameras are being used correctly.

Policies such as when the cameras should be turned on and when they’re allowed to be turned off.

The vendor selected has also offered a better solution for the previous data storage challenge, offering easier access and manageability.

In the end Chief Fletcher says he hopes to launch the cameras officially within the next few months, to strengthen the relationship between officers and community members.
