Clements defies injuries with undefeated Lions team
DALTON, Ga. (WDEF) — Christian Heritage Drew Clements doesn’t let injuries — or school work — stop him from being one of the stars for the undefeated Lions.
Clements is an integral part of the eighth best team in the state.
“He’s passionate about what he does. He’s consistent. He’s an every day guy,” Coach Tyler Watkins said.
The Lions love to give senior point guard Drew Clements the ball.
“He’s a dog. He’s a competitor. If you need a bucket you can go to Drew,” teammate Nash Bingham said.
“He’s one of the best ones I’ve coached. He’s really really talented,” Watkins said. “There’s not really anything he can’t do on the floor. He shoots the ball well. He gets to the rim, one of the best that I’ve coached. He’s just got an attack mindset, which makes him a really tough player to guard.”
Sure, Clements puts up double digits nearly every night. However, he doesn’t lead just the Lions stat lines.
“He’s a great leader. Every day in practice, he comes in here and works hard,” Bingham said. “He coaches all the younger guys, the freshmen. Helps them with what to do, what not to do. And I think just his experience throughout the years has helped a lot of us younger guys.”
“The thing I love the most about Drew is he loves basketball. He loves Christian Heritage basketball. And he always shows up, and I know what I’m going to get from him every single night,” Watkins said. “I can’t describe to you the toughness level that this guy has. I mean last year he rolled his ankle probably three times, and it was the size of a balloon all three times. And the next day, he played in every one of the games.”
Just like those injuries, Clements fights through difficult classes to maintain an A-B average his senior year.
“I’ve worked harder. This year is when colleges start looking, so I’ve really focused in on my grades,” Clements said.
“It just shows working hard you can do anything. Everybody says senior year you hunker down but I think he’s got it in gear, and it sets a good example for all of us,” Watkins said.
