Cleveland family concerned after threatening messages

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (WDEF) – A Cleveland family is concerned and fearful, after finding threatening messages where they live.

Police say they have upped patrols in the area where the family lives, and are trying to pin down a suspect or suspects, in what could possibly be a hate crime.

Sharee Jarret, a wife and mother of three, says it happened twice.. racial slurs and threatening messages written on her home.

“I was in the shower and my five year old knocked on the door and told me that someone was banging on the door and when i looked it was my neighbor and you know he was concerned and told, he told me that there was someone, someone wrote bad things on my door, also I seen the same thing on their door”.

She says the next day she found “die” written on her door.

Jarret has been living at the apartment for almost a year, and wants to know why this is happening to her family.

“My kids shouldn’t have to, you know, experience something like this at a young age, you know, I just got really, I just really was just nervous and didn’t … I’ve never experienced anything like this”.

A man who works at the apartment says the incident is unusual and won’t be tolerated.

Cleveland Police Sargent Evie West says they’ve contacted the FBI and are looking at the incident as a possible hate crime.

“I mean if this is something that we find out who the suspects are I mean they could be charged with a felony. So it’s serious. It’s not a joke”.

Sargent West says detectives have talked to around 100 people who live in and around the apartment complex, but haven’t been able get any information on a suspect or suspects.

“You know, a lot of times, i mean you think, well, maybe it’s juveniles, you know, because right now we’re on fall break, the kids are out of school, so could it be? Absolutely it could be, could it be a prank? Yeah it could be .. uh.. but unfortunately, I mean we’re investigating this as a hate crime and we’re going to find out who it is … um … and then charge them, accordingly”.

Sargent West says it’s a little strange that no one saw anything when the incident first happened. The victim stated it happened sometime between 8:20 and 9:45 at night…. a time when people might be outside.

If you know anthing about what happened contact Cleveland Police. They are offering a reward.
