Collegedale Celebrates Chinese New Year
HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) – Hundreds of people celebrated the Chinese New Year today in Collegedale.
High Point Chinese SDA Church hosted the celebration in hopes of spreading love, culture, and curiosity.
This is the second year Collegedale has celebrated the holiday, thanks to Pastor Dennis Li. “We wanted it to invite everyone no matter where you are from. Let’s all come together,” he said.
Pastor Dennis Li said the festival is about family, for family: “We’re living in the same world. We are brother sisters. It’s OK. Let’s all do what we can and make this world be better.”
Li moved to Chattanooga from China six years ago.
Three years ago he started High Point.
He said he wanted to start a church where people can find belonging and appreciate diversity. “We are different. It’s okay. We don’t need to be the same. But we can still accept, love, support. If we do that, this whole community will be better,” he said.
The festival provided authentic Chinese food and merchandise, brought directly from China.
Festivities included music, dancing, and face painting.
Li said he wanted to give people a taste of how Chinese people celebrate the new year.
