Collegedale Police identify truck driver in train collision

The driver is from south Georgia

COLLEGEDALE, Tennessee (WDEF) – Collegedale Police are updating their investigation into the train collision Tuesday on Apison Pike.

The driver of the truck that was hit by the train was not local.

He is 64 year old Jorge Luis Cruz-Vega from Martinez, Georgia.

He drove for Starrette Houston Trucking LLC out of Augusta, Georgia.

Officials have said that he was delivering a 164 foot beam for the Apison Pike construction project, when he apparently got stuck on the tracks.

Cruz-Vega was not injured when the train hit the back end of his load.

Officials have told us that charges could be filed against the driver, but Collegedale Police emphasize they won’t talk about that until after their investigation is complete.

The intersection at Apison Pike at Four Corners remained closed today to traffic heading towards Southern Adventist and McKee Baking.

But the crossing, itself, is open.

The Greenway is also closed from Thatcher’s Switch Park to the duck pond.

Also, railroad repair crews continue to clear the tracks.
