Community rallies around teen recovering from brain surgery

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — The community is rallying around a Soddy Daisy High School student who was diagnosed with brain cancer back in September and is now recovering from surgery.

With decorations hanging, and presents under the tree, you can tell Christmas is near at the Hill household. After spending lots of time in Nashville at the hospital, the family is happy everyone is home for the holidays.

“She has been able to come home and she is very excited to be able to come home this weekend for Christmas. We were worried because we had been in the hospital for a couple of days because her blood account was low, but yeah she is very ecstatic to be home,” Jason Hill said.

Kaylan Hill, 18, was diagnosed with brain cancer back in September. Kaylan’s father, Jason, says she had to go through major surgery.

“She had to relearn how to walk, talk pretty much. She was paralyzed on the left side of her body for quite sometime. She actually recovered a lot quicker than what we expected her to,” Jason said.

She is currently going through radiation therapy in Nashville. During this difficult time the community stepped up.

“Just all in all, everybody has come out of the woodwork. It is amazing,” Jason said.

Students at Soddy Daisy High School helped raise donations, prepared meals, and even provided presents for Kaylan.

“You know we have been up in Nashville constantly for awhile and we came back just to see the amount of gifts and donations that people have just reached out to donate to her was just unbelievable,” said Crystal Hill, Kaylan’s mother.

As the family gather around to play games, Jason admires his daughter’s strength.

“She just keeps pushing forward and that is one of the great things about it is to watch her.”

A community stepping up to make the holidays better.

Kaylan has 11 more radiation sessions left. If you would like to donate, here is a link to Kaylan’s GoFundMe page.
