Cop killer sent back to higher security prison

Tennessee (WDEF) – Convicted cop killer Jesse Mathews is being returned to close custody at a state run prison facility.

He was moved to a medium security prison.

Neysa Taylor with the Tennessee Department of Corrections said in an email, "Every year inmates are assessed and classified based on a number of factors including offense and behavior while incarcerated. Earlier this year Mathew’s was approved to move to close custody. While this is less restrictive than maximum, close custody is the appropriate designation. Due to Mathews’ recent reclassification, he should not have had another assessment so soon. Mr. Mathews is being returned to close custody at a state run facility."

Mathews plead guilty to the 2011 murder of Chattanooga Police Sgt. Tim Chapin during a robbery.

This is not the first time that Mathews has been moved to medium security and then back again.
