SWAT situation on Gadd Road ends peacefully
HIXSON, Tenn. (WDEF) — A SWAT situation in Hixson ended peacefully Tuesday morning, after Chattanooga police negotiated with the suspect.
When Anna Palmer’s mother woke her up this morning, she went outside and couldn’t believe what she saw in her neighborhood.
“The SWAT team was here. Twenty cars were up the road. The road was blocked off. It was like, ‘Go inside,'” Palmer said.
Chattanooga Police responded to a call on Gadd Road for a man dealing with a possible mental health issue. They also were receiving reports about people being held in the home against their will.
“A couple of individuals from inside the house emerged. The person that the call was originally placed for remained inside the residence. Neighborhood policing supervisors determined a need for negotiators. Special operations personal responded. They spent about two hours establishing contact with the person inside and we were able to successfully resolve the incident,” said Lt. Austin Garrett, with the Chattanooga Police Department.
Special operations commanders say their ultimate goal is preserving life.
“Today is a good example of that where we are able to resolve something successfully through communication with the people at the residence. Negotiators are trained to do that. So when we are requested out by patrol officers and they see a specific need, we come out and do that,” Lt. Garrett said.
Palmer is glad everything ended peacefully, but she also feels for the people involved
“It is kind of a sad situation too. Because he is really nice. Whenever I pass by he will wave and stuff, but I really do think something in that situation is wrong,” Palmer said.
