Crews brine roads in anticipation of snow

HAMILTON, Tenn. (WDEF) — Crews spent the day putting brine on the roads in preparation for a snowstorm.

Driving along the interstate on Monday, you might have seen TDOT crews brining the roads. It is all in preparation of Tuesday’s storm.

“We started at 9 this morning and we have been putting Brine down all day and on the interstates and state routes, throughout the region two area,” said Jennifer Flynn, with TDOT.

They do this to control the snow.

“Brine is a salt water solution that keeps snow in a slushy state after the snow starts falling, basically it is salt water,” Flynn said.

TDOT officials say it was the perfect day to do it.

“Because it was sunny, above freezing, so that gives the salt water time to dry and it leaves a faint sheen of salt on the roads,” she said.

Brining the roads prepares them for what is to come.

“It will give us a head start on fighting something that does happen. And we are hearing that it is going to be a snow event, which is much preferable to an ice event,” Flynn said.

All in all, this has been a busy season.

“We have been a little more active than it has been in the past couple of year’s. So we are prepared to deal with whatever happens.”
