Dalton police warn public of mail scam

DALTON, Georgia (WDEF) – Dalton police are warning the public of a scam after a city resident told officers she got a check in the mail as a “mystery shopper” assignment.

The Dalton resident said she received an official-looking letter with the check that stated she was going to be serving as a mystery shopper to check out the service at a MoneyGram store. She was instructed to deposit the check in her own account and then take out cash to send to other “mystery shoppers.”

Realizing the check was a scam, she notified the police.

Dalton police say,  “Scams like this pop up all the time. A good rule to remember is that legit businesses aren’t going to send you money just for the fun of it, and if something sounds too good to be true it usually is. Don’t fall for the scam!”

If you suspect you’ve been a victim of a scam or spot one, feel free to call the DPD at 706-278-9085.
