Diocese of Nashville official sentenced for statutory rape

Victim was a school girl in Murfreesboro

MURFREESBORO, Tennessee (WDEF) – A former church official was sentenced on Monday to 20 years in prison for sexual abuse of a girl.

Michael D. Lewis pleaded guilty to statutory rape charges.

The abuse happened between 2014-16 when Lewis was the director of religious education at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

She was a student there at the school.

The young woman told Lewis in court today that she will never again be the little girl who was too afraid to stand up for herself.

Lewis still faces a civil lawsuit in the case.

Susan Vance of SNAP of Tennessee (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) has issued the following statement:

“The sentencing of this rapist is due to the courage of a young victim who reported to the police.  SNAP of Tennessee stands with her in this fight for justice.”
