Early morning fire destroys home on Smith Road

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tennessee (WDEF) – An early morning fire burned a Hamilton County home to the ground.

It happened shortly after 5 A.M. in the 7900 block of Smith Road.

Michael Plemons lives across the street. He said he woke up and looked out his window only to find his neighbor’s home on fire.

“I walked out my front door and the house was engulfed flames and as you can see on the pictures I showed you; that’s what it looked like. It looked a lot worse; I didn’t get good pictures but it was engulfed in flames about as high as that tree right there," Plemons said.

When fire crews put out the blaze and left, they had no idea they would soon get a call to return. Less than 30-minutes after arriving on scene, News 12 had to call 911 and get firefighters back out to the scene after flames reignited due to windy conditions.

Small flames could be seen on the walls that were left standing so crews sprayed foam and tore down those remaining walls.

According to authorities, no one was in the home when the blaze first ignited. Plemons said the owners had recently remodeled the house but were not living in it.

“They were constantly here all the time. But lately, the only time they come is to mow the grass,"

Although the cause of the fire has not been officially determined, a next door neighbor told News 12 she heard lots of thunder around the time the house caught on fire.
