East Lake Elementary STEM Program

East Lake Elementary School offers their students a special after-school program for girls interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

More than 20 fourth grade girls meet Wednesday’s for the program. Students get the opportunity to learn more about STEM and also do fun hands on experiments. Jill Blackburn, East Lake Elementary Science and Math Teacher said, "Girls are under represented in STEM careers. Girls usually do well in science, technology, engineering and math in school, but then when they get out in STEM careers they don’t usually choose them. Maybe because they don’t know about these careers. They haven’t been exposed to mentors in those fields." Blackburn said that they started the program for girls that have showed promise in those areas of study. The students have scored proficient or advanced on standardized tests and are on an even playing field with students across the state.
