East Ridge, Hixson, and Tyner Among Favorites This Fall in District 6-AA
Chattanooga-(WDEF) High school football practice gets underway at the end of July.
So on Thursday, coaches and players from District 6-AA gathered at Finley Stadium to give us a mini-preview of the upcoming season.
District 6-AA features four new head coaches, although Hixson’s Dan Duff is not that new.
He coached the Wildcats from 1996 to 2001. Now he’s back where he plans to lean on his linemen.
"The most experience we have is in our fronts, our offensive and defensive lines. So heck, that’s a good place to begin in any football team."
New Howard coach Mark Teague might have made the other district coaches jealous with the size of his offensive linemen.
"Our smallest freshman on our offensive line might be 285. But everyone of our starters. We have no one under 315."
New Central coach Ryan Mallory hopes his guys can find a way to own the fourth quarter.
"We were close in a lot of games last year. Put in a position to win in probably every game we played, but we just fell short. Some of the things we are really trying to do this year is to learn how to finish."
Brainerd will have to replace long time quarterback Sam Caffey, so that’s why their defense could be key.
Said assistant Tyrus Ward,"I think our greatest success this year will probably be on the defensive side of the ball. We have six returning starters coming back on that side of the ball."
Red Bank stumbled with a 3-7 record last season, so the Lions motto for this season is simple.
Said assistant Matt Bowman,"Our motto for this year in 2014 at Red Bank High School is ‘Restore the Roar.’ Our young men are very, very hungry for wins. They are very, very hungry to be the best for Red Bank High School football."
The coaches picked Hixson and East Ridge to tie for the district title with Tyner third. Then it was Howard, Red Bank, Central, and Brainerd.
The Pioneers are considered one of the favorite with 15 returning starters.
Said head coach Tracy Malone,"We return 3 tailbacks, 3 fullbacks, and a couple of tight ends. Six receivers that played. A quarterback and a back-up quarterback."
