Etowah teen charged with murder in 2017 death of Kelsey Burnette

ETOWAH, Tenn. (WDEF) — An arrest is made in the nearly year old murder of an Etowah woman.

18-year-old Kelsey Burnette disappeared last July.

Her body was found on the side of the road a couple of days later.

Court records show 18-year-old Joseph Wielzen was arrested for death of Burnette on Thursday. He was a juvenile at the time of the crime.

Wielzen is charged with one count of Felony Murder, and one count of Aggravated Rape. The affidavit states he was the last person to see Burnette. Wielzen told investigators he had consensual sex with Burnette, but they say evidence shows it was rape.

According to an autopsy report, Burnette’s cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.

ETOWAH, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has made an arrest in the July 2017 death of Kelsey Burnette.

The TBI says that the suspect was a juvenile at the time of the crime and is not being identified at this time.

According to the TBI, a male teen from Etowah was charged with one count of Felony Murder and one count of Aggravated Rape and booked into the McMinn County Jail.

The arrest follows a joint investigation by the TBI, the Etowah Police Department, and the 10th District Attorney General’s Office.

The TBI says Kelsey Burnette disappeared on July 1st, 2017 and her body was found on July 4th, 2017 off the side of Charles Street in Etowah.

According to the TBI, the suspect in the investigation surrendered to law enforcement on June 21st, 2018.
