Explosives found during Varnell traffic stop

VARNELL, Ga. (WDEF) — Several different agencies are investigating explosive devices that were found in a car in Whitfield County.

According to officials with the Varnell Police Department, it all started with a traffic stop.

Thursday afternoon, officers stopped a vehicle on Highway 71 and it pulled onto Nob North Drive.
The driver was suspected of DUI drugs and a check of his vehicle revealed some homemade explosive devices.
The GBI Bomb Squad was called to the scene and residences were evacuated within one thousand yards.

“We live here. I come home. I am talking on the telephone. My wife comes in the house and there are two police officers and we were told to evacuate,” Lewis Yasenchak said.

Agencies including the Varnell Police, Cohutta Police, and Whitfield County Fire and Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office responded.
