Fire burns an unused classroom at Central High School

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) An investigation is underway to determine what cause a fire on Thursday at a Central High classroom.

Chattanooga firefighters got the call around 11:30 AM.

They found the fire was contained to just one classroom at the back of the school near the soccer field.

Asst. Fire Marshal Chuck Hartung told us that firefighters found “light smoke showing from the building, so they initiated a fire attack and were able to put the fire out very quickly using fire hoses from the fire truck.”

While the fire was limited to just the one class, there is smoke and water damage throughout that part of the building.

It happened in an old Home Economics classroom that hadn’t been used recently.

The only students at the school were in the gym in a different building.

Hartung added “It is very fortunate that this incident happened after classes were dismissed for the year.”

Investigators don’t know yet how it started.
