Fireworks Can Affect Veterans with PTSD

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The veterans administration says 10-20 percent of veterans suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD.

And for some veterans, fireworks can bring back traumatic experiences from combat.

Retired US Navy Captain and Vietnam Veteran Mickey McCamish says veterans are aware of professional fireworks displays.

But it’s often the unanticipated neighborhood fireworks that bring back those wartime memories.

Mickey McCamish says, “Out of courtesy to the veteran, if a neighbor choose to shoot would be to go talk to them about them. Be sensitive to the veteran and what the veteran might have experienced during wartime.”

McCamish says every veteran reacts differently to fireworks.
