Former assistant police chief in Alabama sentenced for misconduct

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Federal prosecutors say a former assistant police chief has been sentenced for beating a man during an interrogation, making false statements and selling drugs.

Authorities said in a release Friday that 41-year-old former assistant Tallassee police chief Chris Miles has been sentenced to 41 months in prison.

Officials say Miles beat a man in the face and head with a packet of paper the size of a phone book during an interrogation in April 2013. Investigators say Miles lied about the assault to the FBI and sold about 16 pounds of marijuana that he stole from the department’s evidence room to a known drug dealer.

Prosecutors say Miles pleaded guilty in November to deprivation of civil rights, two counts of making false statements and drug possession with intent to distribute.
