Former deputy sheriff arrested on sexual assault charges

WINDER, Ga. (AP) – Authorities say a former deputy sheriff in northeast Georgia has been arrested on sexual assault charges from an incident involving a woman in custody.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles says 42-year-old William Stephenson Mitchell is charged with sexual assault after he took a woman in custody to the Bartow County Jail on March 12. Mitchell had been employed at the Barrow County deputy sheriff for eight years.

Mitchell was also charged with false statements or writings and violation of oath of public office.

On March 18, Barrow Sheriff Jud Smith learned of the incident and contacted the GBI three days later.

Miles says Mitchell was terminated before criminal charges were filed.
