Friends rally around Walker County man after fire destroys home

WALKER COUNTY, Ga. (WDEF) — After a Walker County man lost everything in a house fire, friends and family are rallying behind him.

Mangled metal is left over from a house fire off Highway 95 in Rock Spring. Walker County firefighters responded to the call early this morning. It was Brian Southerland’s shop and apartment.

“The first thing I did when I found out there was a fire in that area was I sent a text message to find out whether it was him or not,” said Joy Bryson, a friend.

Family and friends say he was taken to the hospital with a broken shoulder and burns on his face. But they feared the worst.

“Oh my God, I don’t know how in the world, by the skin of his teeth is how he got out of that alive,” Bryson said.

Southerland was released from the hospital and is now resting. Friends want to help him out, because they say this fire took everything away from him.

“Get him at least some clothes and the basics, because as I have said he lost everything. He worked out of the front of that building and lived in the back of it in the apartment. He lost everything,” Bryson said.

She says Southerland is giving.

“Brian has always been around so he has always been there. Good and bad and I’d like to see people do the same for him,” Bryson said.

Bryson is hoping the community will step up.

“We all have are down times and that is when we can find out how good people can be,” she said.

Family and friends set up a GoFundMe Page for Southerland.
