From The Archives: NWA’s Cancelled Show in Chattanooga

Chattanooga (WDEF) This weekend, the movie "Straight Outta Compton" tells the story about the revolutionary rap group NWA.

24 years ago the group was scheduled to perform in Chattanooga.

They were one of the opening acts for LL Cool J at McKenzie Arena (the Roundhouse back in the day).

But their song at the time, "F*** The Police" wasn’t going over well with local law enforcement.

They applied pressure and the promoter yanked them from the bill.

Our first story includes an interview with then- Chief Deputy Jim Hammond on the song.

We warn you, in 1991, we didn’t have the term "the n-word."

They just say it.

Our second story aired the day of the show, July 5th, 1991.  NWA wasn’t at the arena.  But their fellow rappers on the bill talk about who they were and what their message was.

You’ll hear from Dave & Maseo from De La Soul and also from Slick Rick.
