“Fun Day” at Greenwood Terrace
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) — It was a beautiful day all over Chattanooga.
But on Dee Drive, things were especially nice for the residents of Greenwood Terrace.
The local chapter of women’s group Zia organized a fun day for the neighborhood, bringing residents together for an afternoon of food, games, and community support.
“Everything is great today. We got the whole community coming out to support positive vibes, and just bringing their kids out and letting people know that there is unity in the community,” said an attendee.
Local institutions such as the Chattanooga Library, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, and various faith-based organizations set up informational booths at the gathering.
To City Councilwoman Demetrus Coonrod, the event was an opportunity to connect the residents of low income housing with resources to improve their life.
“A lot of times, when you have a housing development you have high risk single homes, as such. And so we wanted to make it a priority to come back into the community and provide them with the resources they need that’s necessary to continue to put them on a positive upward mobility track,” said Coonrod.
One tent featured assistance for voter registration.
Councilwoman Coonrod said she wants residents to become involved in the community, and familiarize themselves with local law enforcement and public safety agencies.
“We know that the trying times that we’re in right now — voting is a must. And, as you know, here in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, we’re in election season, right. So, we want to make sure that we’re breaking all barriers and making people understand that we can get you registered to vote. We also want to build that relationship among our Sheriff’s Department, our Police Department, and our fire Department. Why? Because each entity is connected to public safety,” said Coonrod.
The event was open to all from noon to three P.M.
