Golden Apple Award Teacher of the Year

Mark Sargent shows a look of disbelief after the announcement that he is the 2012 WDEF News 12 Golden Apple Award Winner.

"It humbles me because I recognize that whatever I did, whatever success I have, comes as a result of so many other people."

Sargeant is a teacher and the principal at Lester Coon Adventist school in Apison.

"I recognize that at some level I am making a positive difference in the world and that is what I want to do."

Over the course of school year, WDEF News 12’s Joe Legge has recognized 30 teachers from the Tennessee Valley.
These educators are nominated by their students, who say they inspired them to do better.

"Just makes me want to be the teacher that, I guess someone thinks I am and maybe strive to do a better job. It definitely motivates you to want to do a better job than you’re already doing."

Four teachers were also finalists for the Golden Apple award.
For some, it was a moment of reassurance.

"The students are worth it, it doesn’t feel so much like a job, it’s not hard to go home and do that because I enjoy it."

"There’s so much negativity today that it’s a positive thing, especially for the Golden Apple Award and what Bi-Lo does."

For others, it’s a moment her students will always remember.

"It’s such a positive impact on them, they’ll never forget it, they’ll never forget this."
