Gov. Lee signs transgender sports ban into law

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WDEF) – Tennessee officially joins the list of states that are banning transgender athletes from competing in girls’ sports.

Governor Bill Lee signed the bill into law Friday evening.

Tennessee becomes the third state this year to do so.

Mississippi and Arkansas Governors have signed off on their bans.

South Dakota passed a transgender sports ban, but their Governor modified many of the details in that law.

Republicans nationally are pushing the agenda.

It has come up in more than 20 states so far this year, including a bill making its way through the North Carolina House now.

The Tennessee bill passed easily in both houses, despite critics who say claim there haven’t been any transgender sports issues here.

They also say the law is bound to face legal challenges, with the ACLU tonight saying they will see Gov. Lee in court.

“Transgender people have the right to participate in sports consistent with who they are, just like everyone else. Denying this right is pure discrimination.”

But Governor Lee says the law will save save female sports.
