Pastor charged with attempt child rape

ALTAMONT, Tennessee (WDEF) – A man who claims to be pastor of the Palmer Church of God has been charged with attempted child rape.

A deputy found William E. “Tim” Smith, Jr. with a 12 year old girl in a remote wooded area.

The deputy says they were engaged in sexual conduct in his pickup truck.

In his report, the deputy said he was checking out the area on Ross Creek Road because of illicit drug activity there.

He says he investigated a pickup that was left running, when he caught Smith in the act.

Smith told the deputy that the girl was 18 years old, but she later confessed she was just 12.

She says she and a cousin had gone to the lake with Smith, but they dropped her off.

She says Smith parked in the woods and got out to use the bathroom.

When he returned, he tried to rape her, and that’s when the deputy intervened.

The deputy says he also found a bottle of Schedule II prescription pills on Smith.

The Sheriff’s department has notified the Department of Children’s Services which will also investigate the girl’s situation.

“This is very disturbing and heartbreaking,” stated Sheriff Clint Shrum.
