Hamilton County DA responds to online cold case petition

DA Coty Wamp says cold cases are still being investigated within the CPD

HAMILTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) — A petition has been created on change.org against Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp.

The petition calls for the acting D.A. to re-open the cold case unit at the Chattanooga Police Department.

However, Wamp says there are some misunderstandings behind that notion.

She says when she took office, the unit consisted only of two dedicated cold case investigators.

Wamp says both either retired or resigned before she took office in August.

“I think there’s a myth or rumor that just because I don’t have dedicated cold case investigators in the office, it means that I’m not prosecuting actively or investigating cold cases,” Wamp said. “I still have two criminal investigators in my office, both of which have worked with cold [cases] in the past and are still investigating cases. We have a number of pending cold cases in criminal court currently. By the end of the year, I hope, personally, to indict two more cold cases — one of which I’ll be handling myself next year. That one was a case that the cold case unit didn’t even investigate.”

Wamp says cold cases are currently, actively being prosecuted in Hamilton County and that to think otherwise is “just not true.”

She clarified that cold cases were never not one of her offices priorities, but the D-A doesn’t see the need to dedicate two investigators strictly to such situations.
