Hamilton County jailer arrested on multiple drug charges

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) – A Hamilton County jailer is now in jail himself facing multiple felony drug charges.

According to the arrest affidavit, Ryan Epperson, 26 of Red Bank posed as a medical professional to steal countless amounts of narcotics from Erlanger and Parkridge Hospitals.

According to investigators, Epperson gained access to rooms where medication dispensers were located.

Once inside, he reportedly used an object to pry open the dispensers and steal the drugs. 

According to the arrest affidavit, when Epperson was caught red handed, he admitted to taking the narcotics because he has a drug addiction problem and was trying to feed his addiction. 

When authorities asked if he had anything on him, Epperson reached into his pants pocket and pulled out six vials of stolen Demerol. 

When police searched Epperson’s home and car, they recovered large amounts of stolen narcotics that included: Demerol, Fentanyl, Hydromorphin, Morphin , Methazone and Promethazine. Epperson remains in custody at the Silverdale Detention Center on a $93,000 bond. 

In the wake of this high-profile arrest,  Erlanger issued a written statement.  A portion of it reads: "We will use this incident as an opportunity to remind our staff that ID badges must be worn at all times by vendors, staff , physicians volunteers and medical students while on campus."

Sheriff Jim Hammond has ordered a full internal affairs investigation.
