Hamilton County Mayor joins city mayors to launch smoke-free initiative

Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – Ten-city mayors joined Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger Monday to launch a new effort aimed at making our community smoke-free.
They’re asking citizens and visitors to *not* smoke in parks and public spaces… especially around children and those with health conditions that might be aggravated by tobacco smoke.
Mayor Jim Coppinger of Hamilton County said, "It’s a misconception that just because you’re outdoors that it’s going to dissipate before people are actually engaged in secondhand smoke and its simply not true."
About 23-percent of Hamilton County adults still smoke.
Officials say the tax burden on Hamilton County residents funneled into government smoking-related expenses costs every household eleven-hundred dollars.
