Harrison residents lobby county commission against landfill proposal

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – A community group from Harrison is putting pressure on the Hamilton County Commission to reject a bid create a new landfill on top of the old one.

The property is at 9000 Bryan Road which was the old Birchwood landfill.

The owners want to turn it into a construction and demolition materials landfill.

But the group Keep Harrison Beautiful is trying to stop them.

“Rezoning this property for a C&D landfill makes no sense because there is already a C&D landfill nine miles up Hwy 58,” said John Chenkus, a Harrison resident.

“This could potentially have devastating effects on our drinking water and our habitat including toxic runoff into the Tennessee River. You can look at the issues at similar landfills in Camden and Decatur County. Both communities are suffering today because private companies put toxic waste in both landfills including unsafe levels of cancer causing metals. Then the owners just walk away.”

Members spoke at the Hamilton County Commission meeting Wednesday morning and will attend a zoning meeting this afternoon.

“This is a dire situation, not only for Harrison, but for all of Hamilton County and everyone who uses the Tennessee River as their water source,” said Lynn Bishop, Harrison resident. “Please call the Hamilton County Mayor and Commission and demand this be stopped for the future of our families and the region.”
