High speed chase suspect in custody

MCMINN COUNTY, Tennessee(WDEF) – A Cleveland man is being held in the Hamilton County jail after leading law enforcement on a high speed chase.

Donald Abbott, 46, is accused of leading several law enforcement agencies on a high speed chase that began in Meigs County and ended in McMinn County when his truck collided with another vehicle.

It happened Tuesday night on U.S. Highway 11 near County Road 732.

Donnie Womac and his wife heard the crash from their home.

"When we came outside, the truck was still smoking; they had just hit. The police were trying to get him out of the truck," Womac said.

According to Womac, a rescue crew was called in to free two women who were trapped in the other vehicle that was knocked into a ditch.

"The ladies; I’m sure they were having a good time and next thing they knew, they were involved in a wreck that they should have not been involved in."

There’s no word on their condition.

Abbott was taken to Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga for injuries he suffered during the crash.

According to a Hamilton County arrest affidavit, Abbott became physically combative inside the hospital. It took several officers to get him under control.

Abbott has a warrant out for his arrest in connection to a robbery. He also has a warrant out for his arrest is Georgia for a probation violation.
