Historic bridge gets new home at new Cleveland greenway

CLEVELAND, Tennessee (WDEF) – Cleveland and Bradley County made a special dedication for a historic bridge and walking path.

A steel truss bridge is the focal point on a new greenway walking-bike-jogging path.

The bridge was originally built in 1878 and has now been restored.

It’s the oldest documented highway steel through truss bridge built in Tennessee and, with the restoration, it’s also the oldest one in the state still operating.

Bridge historian Calvin Sneed says “It’s endured floods. Logs coming down when I first got to it 20 years ago it was in pretty sad shape. Folks in Cleveland had the forbearance to look at this thing and say you know this is something we need to save this is part of our heritage.”

He adds not only is it to remember history but it’s also important to take care of it.
