UPDATE: Mother charged following death of 19 month old son
Dalton, Georgia (WDEF) — The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office says 27 year old Tiffany Gibson has been charged with two felony counts of 1st degree cruelty to children following the death of her 19 month old son last week.
The Sheriff’s Office says she also had a 5 year old child.
The charges came after the District Attorney’s Office reviewed the evidence collected by investigators and warrants were issued by the Magistrate Court.
According to Sheriff Scott Chitwood, the charges mean Gibson willfully failed to provide adequate care for her two children and severely compromised their well-being as a result of the neglect.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an autopsy on the 19 month old; the Sheriff’s Office is still waiting on that report.
Dalton, Georgia (WDEF) — On Monday afternoon, the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home on Latonia Drive for a child who was not breathing.
Officers found a deceased 19-month old male infant when they arrived.
According to Sheriff Scott Chitwood, the mother told officers the child was running a temperature the night before and she checked on her son around 5am. The mother told officers when she checked on the child again around 2pm the infant was unresponsive in the crib.
The child was taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.
The GBI tells News 12 that it is state law in Georgia for an autopsy to be performed when the deceased is under 17 years old.
