Juneteenth weekend celebrations: 18th – 19th

Juneteenth celebrations are happening all around the scenic city this weekend.

The Bethlehem Center is hosting their Juneteenth Jubilee tomorrow afternoon from one to four. This free event will have local vendors, music by DJ MCPRO, food trucks, and more.

Reginald Smith is the executive director of the Bethlehem Center. He said this is a celebration of freedom and independence.

“We celebrate as an African American community and now as a national holiday, in which the enslaved Africans that were in Galveston, Texas in 1865, actually received information regarding the Emancipation Proclamation. So, they were the last enslaved Africans to get this information. It’s a day African Americans have been celebrating. It’s kind of an Independence Day of sorts,” said Smith.
